Golden Spike Celebration

In September of 1869, four months after Leland Stanford drove the "golden spike" at the Transcontinental Railroad opening Ceremony in Promontory Summit, Utah, the Central Pacific finished the track through the Niles Canyon - completing the last link between Sacramento and the San Francisco Bay. The new town of Niles, named after Addison C. Niles, a prominent railroad attorney and judge, quickly developed.

The town-wide celebration activities included Live Music, Street Performers, Gun Fighters of The Old West, Art Walk, Sidewalk Sale. The event celebration culminated with a special 1924 film showing at 2:30 pm, of the Transcontinental railway saga, "The Iron Horse", with live piano accompaniment at the Niles Edison Theater, home of the Essanay Silent Film Museum, located at Niles.

The trip on the Niles canyon Railway was a wonderful experience. Posted by Picasa
